To Write Love on Her Arms is taking our annual event, HEAVY AND LIGHT, to Los Angeles and Orlando in January 2014. HEAVY AND LIGHT is a unique evening of songs, conversation, and hope, and for these two shows, there will be intimate acoustic performances by: Jon Foreman (of Switchfoot), The Summer Set (winner of 2013 Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Star Campaign), Tristan Prettyman (singer/songwriter and longtime TWLOHA supporter), Mary Lambert (best known for singing on Macklemore’s anthem “Same Love”), Anis Mojgani (award-winning spoken word poet), as well as a special guest (to be announced). All artists will perform in Los Angeles on January 11 and Orlando on January 19.

HEAVY AND LIGHT is not a benefit show, but an attempt to move people and let them know it’s OK to be honest and to ask for help. This message is shared onstage not only through music, but also through the powerful words of mental health counselors, TWLOHA representatives, and inspiring speakers. Kevin Breel, a mental health advocate whose TED Talk has more than 2 million views, will be speaking at both dates, and Amanda de Cadenet, host of the acclaimed celebrity interview series The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet, will also be speaking in Los Angeles. Everyone who attends a HEAVY AND LIGHT show will also leave with a list of local mental health resources for depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide.
As our founder Jamie Tworkowski says, “We’ve heard stories of people choosing to get help and choosing to stay alive because of HEAVY AND LIGHT, so that’s the heart behind it. It has become our flagship event, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring it to both coasts in January. And we love January because it’s a time when people are wondering if things can be new, wondering if it’s possible to change and possible to start again.”

I went to go look at tickets and the ticket map says that all of them are standing tickets. How are you going to accommodate people with disabilities who can’t stand through an entire concert?

Christmas Day 2006, my 90 year old grandfather puts a gun to his head, deep in mourning over the loss of his wife and his son to cancer. My mother finds him.
October 6, 2008; 13 cop cars surround my parent’s house. In extreme pain and bedridden, but not wanting to be without the other, Mom and Dad are suddenly gone too. They wanted to end the pain and suffering; and planned for a year, but I missed the signs.
December 17, 2013: My family physician of 24 years, was so depressed over losing so many patients; takes his life.
In every corner there is someone who needs help. For those of us who have lost loved ones and friends, don’t engage in the battle of defending. The guilt and feelings of “how did I not know” or “I could have stopped this” take years to repair.
I found out about TWOLHA as I am participating in the Orlando walk Saturday, February 1. To my friends who have lost someone dear, I hope to see you at the walk. I’d like to know your story.
