Liminal Space: A Song of Hope and Encouragement

By To Write Love on Her ArmsJune 27, 2017

Today, our friends from the metal band Greeley Estates released a new EP “Calling All the Hopeless.” Included on the EP is a track called “Liminal Space” which features a snippet from a Ted Talk by TWLOHA’s very own Chad Moses. Ryan Zimmerman, therapist and member of Greeley Estates, shared his thoughts behind the song’s lyrics, what it means to him, and why they included a clip of Chad’s emotional conversation:

Liminal space refers to a transition from “what was” to “the next.”  It is the waiting place of not knowing.  This space is often filled with anxiety, but also a place where growth and change can begin.  I heard a speaker discuss this concept last year.  He believed that this was a space that many young adults get trapped in and are unable to find hope or rest in the uncertainty of the unknown.  Individuals who are unable to cope with this anxiety or uncertainty may choose to run, numb out, or escape with substances, various forms of addiction, or even suicide.  The liminal space can be a dangerous threshold if we choose to flee or escape instead of trusting that the answers will come.

Since our last record came out a few years ago, I have finished my graduate degree in professional counseling.  I am currently a therapist at a treatment center working with young adults who struggle with addiction, depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, and self-harm. This new record in many ways reflects on what I have seen in my work, the work I have done in my own life and my hope for individuals who feel like they are alone without a voice.  I wrote the lyrics to this song last year, and about a month after finishing the lyrics I heard Chad’s Ted Talk.  Chad is an old friend of ours, and we all have so much respect for him, his passionate work and heart for people.  I thought it would be awesome to have part of his dialogue at the end of the track.  My hope is that the messages of “You’re not alone,” “You can’t be replaced; you’re alive for a reason, you’re heart beats with purpose,” and “Hold on your story is far from over” resonates with the listener.

“Liminal Space” lyrics:

You’re not alone, there’s so many of us who have felt the same way
You can’t be replaced; you’re alive for a reason your heart beats with purpose
Stop, take a breath think about what you’re doing
Stop and take a breath it’s not too late for you
Just know you’re not alone
I hope the words that you hear will help your heart keep beating

It’s ok to not be ok we’re all broken in our own way

When you’re on the edge and it feels like the world has turned its back on you
Hold on your story is still far from over
Just take it one day at a time

It’s not too late, there is help for the helpless there is hope for the hopeless
And when you’re at the edge just remember the reason you have held on this long
Stop, take a breath think about what you’re doing
Stop and take a breath it’s not too late for you
Just know you’re not alone
I hope the words that you hear will help your heart keep beating

When you’re on the edge and it feels like the world has turned its back on you
Hold on your story is still far from over
Just take it one day at a time
When you’re at your end and it feels like the walls are closing in on you
Hold on your story is still far from over
Just take it one day at a time

It’s ok to not be ok we’re all broken in our own way
If you feel you’ve lost your way, tomorrow’s another day
