Tonight, I do the best I can to quiet the thoughts.
Even if your body is rebelling against you, your mind is in chaos, and trauma has told you that you are too broken to be fixed—you make today better.
Every time I feel it, I panic. It comes swooping in, stormy and scary. It feels like I’m running from that rhino cloud in James and the Giant Peach.
Anxiety has this really funny way of distorting not only what you see, but how you see, and I was seeing myself only as an extra in everyone else’s lives...
I am now searching for the keys to unlock my caged emotions so that I might once in a while admit candidly before others that I am not always doing okay. And maybe, just maybe, it will be all right for me to be human.
All the time spent thinking I was half-this and half-that and yet not enough of either, when in reality, I am a whole person whose identity is not half-anything.
The Harmaleighs, an indie/rock duo from Nashville, are set to release their sophomore album on August 2. The album is a conceptual work that centers around lead singer Haley’s challenges and triumphs with mental health.
I spend much of my day supporting people in their lowest moments. I try to convey that they are worthy, that they deserve support and help, and how important it is that they take care of themselves.
If I couldn’t even rationalize my mental illness to myself, how could I ever explain it to anyone else?
If I could go back and talk to my younger self who buried her queerness, who felt so much pain and distress over who she was, I would tell her it’s okay to be confused.
Better, when it comes to mental illness, isn’t charted with benchmarks or being able to say “I’m cured.”
If I were to make a list of all the words I, or others, might use to describe me, it might include: “weird,” “inconsiderate,” “quiet,” “lonely,” “goofy,” “kind,” “awkward,” “focused,” and “depressed.”
