PREMIERE: William Beckett’s Piano Version of “Just You Wait” With Q&A

By To Write Love on Her ArmsJuly 1, 2014

If you know William Beckett, you know he is no stranger to writing songs that matter. Today, we’re honored to premiere the piano version of “Just You Wait.”

Keep reading to find out how his sister’s experiences being bullied inspired Beckett to write this song.

1. We know you wrote “Just You Wait” for your sister. What can you tell us about the song?

Our parents divorced when we were very young, so my mom tried to provide the best environment for us, and a few times that meant moving. Being the new kid in school is never an easy thing to do, and my sister and I went through some bullying and singling out. Having a strong individuality just made bullies want to isolate us more. As a result, my sister and I had some real issues with depression and anxiety—leading to thoughts of suicide. This song is all about having strength and perseverance when it feels like you have no reason to.

2. Was it hard to write the song knowing that your sister was going through such a difficult time?

I don’t think I could have written the song at the time it was happening. I think by seeing how bullying has continued to affect people, I felt the need to write it now. In retrospect, I wish that my sister had this song when she was fighting through those rough waters.

3. How has your sister influenced your work as a musician? Is it true she was the first audience you had when you were growing up and starting to write?

My sister is and has always been my second worst critic, behind myself. From the first song I ever wrote she’s always been honest about songs and ideas, and to this day is usually one of the first people I show song ideas to.

4. If you could turn a lyric from the song into a message of hope for our readers, what would it be and why?

“Soon enough you’re gonna graduate.

Start again when you turn the page.

It gets better girl, just you wait.

It gets better girl, just you wait.”

5. Where can we hear you play next?

I’m currently on tour with Rick Springfield and Pat Benatar! And then later this summer I’ll be out on a full United States tour with Paradise Fears. All upcoming tour dates can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/williambeckettmusic/app_123966167614127

I had never heard this song before. Then in march I saw him on tour with We Are The In Crowd and Set It Off. I was on the side of the stage and whe. He played it…I almost cried. He introduced the song saying it was for anyone who had ever felt this way…anyone who needed it. My best friend looked at me and it felt like he was singing to us because it hit so close to home.
